2023 Exchange

2020 * 2021 * 2022 * 2023 * 2024Music Exchange Guidelines

Our 2023 Exchange is coming soon. Here’s the tentative playlist:

01: January: My Burning Bush

Our first release for 2023 is the new My Burning Bush release, a member of this group since the beginning, and who has produced consistent drones and electronic compositions that always give us plenty of room to sit, reflectively, and enjoy. It’s a strong start to the year, and I’m looking forward to seeing what else we see in this group.

02: February: Aversion To Reality

No stranger to our group, Aversion To Reality has done quite a bit, to fool around with different formats and genres, to create a fairly wide range of sounds that are always fun to explore. In this tape, collecting recordings made in 2022 and 2023, you get to hear that range of sounds on full display. It’s an excellent tape to put on in the morning while you are getting ready for work, and in that regard, I works quite well.

02: February Bonus: Homo Hubris – DJ Galaxy 3D Remixes

Our February Bonus Disc is a collection of “remixes” created by DJ Galaxy 3D, a crashed hard-drive from almost 20 years ago, that was recently recovered… to discover that it had managed many of the files in new and interesting ways. You can hear the original album of DJ Galaxy 3D Remixes here, but for this collection, you get some previously unreleased bits that remind you of that glitching hard-drive DJ of your youth that you didn’t know you missed.

03: March: I Died – Of Worlds

(discogs.com/artist/483889-I-Died)

Definitely running late this year, we have I Died’s release for 2023, with six new explorations that are well worth he wait. This disc is a nice cross section of what they have been up to for the last year, and I think the sounds you’ll enjoy on this disc carve out some excellent sonic territory. Enjoy!

04: April: Dylan Houser – Better Late Than Ever

(formaldehydra.bandcamp.com)

True to form, this wonderfully creepy, sprawling, exploratory, and on the whole, fantastic release by Dylan is exactly the kind of thing that you would hope to get from them: an up-close look at what they do, in a wonderful bite-sized dose. And EP? And Album? Somewhere in-between? Perfect, is what it is, and it’s a welcome addition to our group this year.

05: May: Cornelius F. Van Stafrin III

(discogs.com/artist/1856749-Cornelius-F-Van-Stafrin-III)

Every release by Cornelius F. Van Stafrin III feels like a complete work, and one that bear repeated listenings, and of course, your attention. This single-sided lathe-cut record is not only a wonderful example of the world Cornelius does, but is a beautiful and wonderful addition to the group this year. Listen to this often, and loud.

05: May Bonus: Country Rewerks

In a return engagement from our good friend Clodewerks, this time we find four mangled and remixed country songs in a highly experimental context. Ranging a number of styles, this CD not only fits right into this group perfectly, but might be the perfect soundtrack to this summer. Make sure to drive around in your huge truck when you place this, and fly an American Flag from your truckbed, to really let your true colors fly.

06: June: Rainy Em – Summer Document

New to our group this year, but an artist that I’ve admired for almost 20 years, Rainy Em sent in their “Summer Document” this year on cassette, and this is THE RELEASE OF THE SUMMER, that you will not want to stop jamming. It’s very cool to have a new addition to the family, and one with such excellent music under their belt. Thanks again, Rainy Em!

07: July: Le Petit Sac – Please Open on The Sac of July

(petitsac.bandcamp.com)

Le Petit Sac usually joins us for our Music Exchange Group, and lately, he’s been continuing a series of “seasonal holiday releases,” connected to the various times of year his releases come out. This year, we get a “Sac of July” Celebration, with fireworks, Uncle Sam, and the usual kind of noise that we’ve come to know and love from The Sac.

07: July Bonus: Petit Apparition In The Juice Apparatus

Our July Bonus this year is a collaboration, between Le Petit Sac and JUICE MACHINE, two great tastes that tastes amazing together! This is not their first (or last) outing as a group like this, but we are very excited to have this one as part of our exchange this year. I’ve been tempted to ask JUICE MACHINE to join us for this project, and perhaps this is the way that we get them in. What will the future hold? We shall see…

08: August: Vasectomy Party – Defend Your Geometry

We really got lucky this year, and found that our artists were exploring a wide range of formats to present their work. That is no exception with Vasectomy Party, who decided to exploit the 3″ cdr this time around, and offered up a fantastic bite-sized chunk of music that is worth the price of admission. I’m excited to have Vasectomy Party as part of the group this year, and they make a good addition to what we do.

09: September: Regional Processing Facility

We got very lucky this year, and found that two of our releases were actually on lathe-cut records, in addition to the CDs and tapes we also got! The diversity of the sounds, members, and formats we have been exploring has been very exciting, and I have been loving the way it has all been taking shape. Regional Processing Facility is merely the newest project by an artist who has been working since the 90’s, and this is merely the most recent wrinkle in their long-standing career.

This lathe-cut 8″ record on black, square vinyl is not only a wonderfully unique item, but it sounds great! I really hope that we get to see more work from them in the future, and we are really excited to have them as a party of our group this year.

10: October: Jocko Homomorphism – That’s When I Got Shot In The Face

(jocko-homomorphism.bandcamp.com)

I was lucky enough to play a couple shows with Jocko Homomorphism before they moved away from the Mid-Valley, which is a shame, because having kept up with their releases in the years since, they have only gotten better and better with time. For this collection, they offer up a great cross-section of new compositions, and I think that you will agree: this one is worth sitting down with and giving your full attention to. Enjoy!

11: November: Mini-Mutations – Night Time Control

(wtbc.bandcamp.com)

This Mini-Mutations collection contains a variety of tunes that were written and recorded over the last few years. Some have been re-mastered. Other’s have new production elements, and still others are just different. Something new, something old, something borrowed, something: Night Time Control. Log on, and enjoy!

12: December: TanukiSpiderCat

We warp up with a wonderful, long-form release from TanukiSpiderCat, one that is contemplative and explorative, as we chart new ground and follow interesting sounds to their logical extremes. This is a fantastic release, and a great way to close the year!
